New in 2022: Core theme and optional themes.
As part of the overall course structure within TOK, you have to study one compulsory core theme and two out of five optional themes. It is recommended that you start the course with an exploration of the core theme. The core theme focuses on knowledge and the knower. The optional themes are: knowledge and technology, knowledge and language, knowledge and indigenous societies, knowledge and religion or knowledge and politics.

The TOK course in a nutshell:
1 Core themeYou start the course with the study of the compulsory core theme, which explores knowledge and the knower. You explore your own perspective, what it means to know and how we can think about knowledge. |
2 Optional themesYou study two out of five optional themes. Your teacher will chose themes s/he feels passionate about or themes s/he believes would interest you. Your teacher may also keep cultural and/or political considerations in mind. |
5 Areas of knowledgeYou will study a range of areas of knowledge. These areas of knowledge are structures within which much human knowledge is organised. This aspect of the course will primarily be assessed through the essay. |
